FINE+RARE, Oct 2024

There’s a lovely sweetness to the nose here, with baking spice and deep, red-cherry fruit. The wine is lush-textured with fine, chalky tannins. It’s long and concentrated, soft and open with a cherry-scented finish.

The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (Domaine Louis Jadot) is a particular success this year, offering up notes of sweet raspberry and strawberry fruit mingled with notions of anise and other spices. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming, with succulent acids and powdery tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window. Winemaker Frédéric Barnier and his team have once again delivered a strong portfolio chez Jadot. Barnier stressed the importance of sorting and of vigilance during élevage, in particular where acid rot made an appearance, and he didn't hesitate to perform a saignée for cuvées where yields where high. As I've written before, in the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. What's more, barrels are now used four rather than three times, meaning the percentage of new oak overall has fallen. A cold room also helps chill down any fruit that's too warm when it enters the winery, something especially important during the warm 2023 harvest. This vintage also marks the third vintage of organic conversion for the Domaine Louis Jadot and the Domaine Gagey.

Vines at 230–370 m. Thin topsoils with limestone and iron content. Cask sample. Lightish cherry red. Sweet and lightly earthy red fruits. More savoury than the Jadot and Gagey Beaunes, with more weight on the mid palate. Gently chewy, smooth tannins. Embryonically harmonious.
