Punteggio 94/100 · James Suckling, Aug 2021

A solid 2017 with a linear flow of fine tannins through the center of the wine providing structure and backbone that gives the wine lovely energy. Lots of blackberries, ripe strawberries and blue fruit. Long and vivid. Drink after 2024.

The Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo bares the signature of Enrico Scavino on the front label as witness to the generational change at this estate, and countless others across the Langhe, that push forward through time thanks to a continual ownership handoff that goes from father to son. This classic wine is bright and full of vitality, showing a more cheerful side to this often austere Piedmont grape. Dark fruit and cassis segue to cedar and camphor ash.

Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2021-2032, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021

Sourced from seven vineyard sites, each fermented separately, and aged for 10 months in neutral French oak followed by one year in large cask, the 2017 Barolo is floral with orange blossom, clove, white pepper, and candied cherry. The palate is gentle and inviting, with notes of cranberry cocktail, rosewater, and stony earth. Approachable for fresh, early drinking, enjoy 2021-2032. Helmed by fourth generation winemaker Elisa Scavino, the estate owns and manages 30 hectares spanning eight of the 11 communes of the Barolo region and is based in Castiglione Falletto. Since 2007, they have implemented the use of a netted, submerged cap cylindrical system developed by Elisa’s father, Enrico, which achieves a delicate extraction during fermentation. They have moved to slower, longer fermentation periods, and as of 2018 will only be utilizing large casks. In the vineyard, there is great attention to the compression of the soils, creating a healthy ecosystem rich in oxygen and microorganisms and a sustainable approach.

Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2021-2027, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2021

Scavino’s 2017 Barolo is gracious and perfumed. Medium in body and a touch fleeting, the 2017 looks to be a wine best suited for drinking now and over the next few years. The stresses of the growing season were most severe on less-important sites, so it makes sense that the straight Barolo is a touch light. Sweet red cherry, mint, dried flowers and spice linger.
