With fruit sourced from various vineyard sites and townships, the 2012 Barolo Carobric is a slightly awkward wine. The bouquet is heavily characterized by notes of ripe strawberry and cherry preserves that take away from the subtle and more ethereal aromas that Nebbiolo so readily exhibits. The finish is austere, steely and hopefully this wine just needs more time to flesh out and come together.

Just mid ruby with bright orange tinges. Powerful, perfumed sweet cherry on the nose with the merest hint of kitchen spice and fruit cake. Juicy cherry fruit on a palate that is just mid-bodied. Burgundian style and structure. Really something for burgundy lovers yet with firm tannins. (WS)
Scavino's 2012 Barolo Carobric is nicely layered throughout. Creamy and inviting, the Carobric is quite expressive at this early stage. Sweet floral notes meld into a core of red-fleshed fruits. Mint, cinnamon, savory herbs, leather and rose petal are some of the nuances that open up as the Carobric shows off its personality. The Carobric often gets lost in the mix at Scavino, but history has shown it ages very well. In this vintage, the Carobric is mid-weight and a bit more laid back than normal, but the ability to blend fruit across different sites was clearly an advantage.
