The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is noted by candied strawberry, fresh roses, and fennel. Fresh with bright red cherry and dried tea leaf, it offers a crisp structure, with lift and fine present tannins. If you enjoy more tension, the 2018 is perfect for early drinking 2021-2026. Located in Castelnuova dell’Abate, Uccelliera’s first vintage was in 1991. Andrea Cortonesi purchased the farmland in 1986, and he continues to operate the estate today. His philosophy is simply to respect the terrior and to hold a strong commitment to the sense of place. He believes in a homeopathic approach to viticulture, to observe, listen, and work together with nature. The property includes vineyard holdings in three areas that range from 150 to 350 meters in elevation. They utilize large Slavonian 40-hectoliter barrels as well as 225-liter French barrique.

The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is dark, displaying herbal-infused red berries, with savory spice and worn leather perfume. On the palate, I'm finding soft, enveloping textures, with a mix of bright cherries and strawberries, as saline-minerality and savory spices settle on the senses. The finish is medium in length, resonating on a note of hard red candies, yet remaining fresh with a flourish of brisk acids which make the mouth water for more.
The Uccelliera 2018 Rosso di Montalcino offers all the Sangiovese basics, and it does so in style. It pours to reveal a medium garnet color with bright aromas of sour cherry, redcurrant, blue flower and a touch of bitter almond. The palate is lean and tonic, making this a great pairing partner to a simple pasta al pomodoro with extra Parmigiano cheese grated over. The wine ages in oak for a brief six months. It was bottled in September 2019 and saw its commercial release in January 2020. Production is 27,200 bottles strong.
