Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes from Comtes Lafon has a gorgeous bouquet with ebullient red cherry and wild strawberry scents, wonderful mineralité, real cohesion and intent. There is a lot of gusto here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, not exuding the complexity and nuance of the aromatics, quite primal and showing a little toughness toward the finish. This might be enduring an awkward phase, ergo the plus sign mark against my score. Tasted September 2017.

Medium red color. Slightly cool medicinal cast to the aromas of cherry and rose petal. Juicy, firm and intense, with its black cherry, licorice and mineral flavors kept under wraps today by pungent minerality. This youthfully imploded wine finishes brisk, juice and persistent. Lafon made just two barrels of this wine, or the equivalent of 12 hectoliters per hectare, noting that this is a very exposed place that's always the first to get hit by hail. But, happily, there's no hail taste here.
Healthy deep red. Very ripe notes of kirsch and mocha accented by pepper and licorice. Firmer in the mouth than the Monthélie-Les Duresses, showing more mineral tension to the flavors of black cherry and menthol. Nicely harmonious acidity here. Finishes with ripe, slightly dusty tannins and good length.
