(13.2% alcohol; 15 hectoliters per hectare): Healthy dark red. A step up in complexity from the young-vines Santenots, with its aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and bitter chocolate conveying a stronger impression of mineral energy. This wine is more refined and elegant than the regular Santenots but also more concentrated and youthful, boasting a fine-grained texture and the thickness of the vintage. The chocolate note carries through the middle palate. Displays a suaver texture to its mounting tannins as there's more supporting stuffing here. The building finish features notes of black fruits, licorice and minerals.

(13.3% alcohol; destemmed): Dark, bright red. Much more floral on the nose than the young-vines Santenots, offering scents and flavors of red cherry, violet and red licorice. Lovely palate-caressing thickness of texture combined with real lift and verve. This suave, bright, seamless wine is much deeper than the basic Santenots, with its tannins melting into the fruit.
The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Santenots comes from the oldest vines in the parcel, more than 55 years old. It clearly has more precision and focus than the younger vines in the Santenots, with notes of blackcurrant, cassis and cold stone. The palate is medium-bodied with well-integrated new oak (50%) with a smooth and quite seductive, blood orange-infused finish that has a pleasant edge. This is one of the best Clos des Santenots that I have tasted from Jacques Prieur.
