This Collection Case contains three vintages of two of Castello di Ama’s top wines, their Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo and iconic Tuscan Merlot, L’Apparita. It’s a brilliant way to explore two very different expressions of Chianti and Castello di Ama, spanning one decade – with the 2010, 2015 and 2020 vintages. The case contains two bottles (75cl) of each of the following: 2020 San Lorenzo, 2015 San Lorenzo, 2010 San Lorenzo, 2020 L’Apparita, 2015 L’Apparita and 2010 L’Apparita. 2020 San Lorenzo There’s such vibrancy to the 2020 San Lorenzo, its sheer energy balanced with a soft, plush texture. The fruit is crunchy and fresh yet beautifully smooth and gentle, enveloped in fine, chalky tannins. A backbone of bright acidity and minerality drives on to a long finish. Lovely and still such a baby. 13.5% alcohol. 2015 San Lorenzo The 2015 San Lorenzo is effortlessly smooth – with everything seamlessly in balance. The lush and juicy cherries are complemented by spicy perfume, with white pepper notes dancing alongside the fruit. The core of this wine is still tightly packed – showing the potential for evolution here. Acidity drives the long, mouth-watering finish, which offers a twist of smoky, savoury tones. 13.5% alcohol. 2010 San Lorenzo The 2010 San Lorenzo is starting to show some maturity, with tertiary complexity now complementing the fruit. Wild herbal aromatics add lift, while there are savoury, bloody, earthy tones that give depth to the wine. There’s an elegance, length and freshness, with lovely resolution to the tannins. There’s no rush, but this is in a gorgeous place right now. 13% alcohol. 2020 L’Apparita The nose here is laden with rich, sweet, plummy fruit, with a pleasing perfumed edge of assam tea. This is youthful, with a creaminess, depth and richness still, yet also offering the weightless power that this sit can produce. Italianate acidity provides plenty of energy to cut through the concentrated fruit, and the round, supple tannins are nicely integrated. 2015 L’Apparita This is striking in its savoury, leathery intensity – offering great complexity and dried fruit notes. It’s textured and vibrant, with sandy tannins, bright acidity and a line that is decidedly Italianate. While this is starting to show its maturity, there’s plenty of fruit beneath, and with the structure that will allow it to evolve over the next decade at least. 2010 L’Apparita The 2010 was singing when we tasted it – a wine of surprising youth after more than a decade in bottle. The nose is expressive with sweet spice, sweet fruit and a creamy richness. There’s a crunch of tannin still on the palate, yet these are satisfyingly resolved, adding just enough bite to the wine. There’s a sweetness and floral scent to the finish, with the slightest hint of tealeaf.

2020 San Lorenzo The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is fabulous. It offers up a compelling mix of blackberry, graphite, crushed rocks, spice, lavender and black pepper, showing striking inner sweetness, gorgeous mid-palate pliancy and mid-blowing balance, all in a medium-bodied style that will be approachable with minimal cellaring. San Lorenzo remains an archetype for contemporary Chianti Classico. Production is down about 30% in 2020 because of stringent selection. (June 2023) Drink 2025-2040 - 95Pts Antonio Galloni 2015 San Lorenzo A bold, racy wine, the 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo captures all the exuberance of the year while retaining a good bit of structure. Like all the Ama wines, the San Lorenzo packs a serious punch in its dark flavors and intense, muscular feel. The San Lorenzo is essentially a second selection of lots from the dual flagship Gran Seleziones La Casuccia and Bellavista. Lavender, spice and menthol add the closing shades of nuance. The blend is 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot and Malvasia Nera. More importantly, the San Lorenzo is another very serious wine in this range. (July 2018) Drink 2020-2030 - 92Pts Antonio Galloni 2010 San Lorenzo A drop-dead gorgeous beauty, the 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is laced with expressive dark red cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco, mint and licorice. There is a lot going on in the glass. The 2010 boasts exceptional purity in its flavors, along with superb textural elegance and phenomenal overall balance. What a gorgeous wine this is. I imagine the 2010 will drink nicely for many years, but it could use more time in bottle. In 2010, Ama did not bottle their single-vineyard selections. All the best fruit went here. (May 2014) Drink 2016-2030 - 92+Pts Antonio Galloni 2020 L’Apparita The 2020 L'Apparita will soon take its place among the great Apparitas. Unctuous and layered in the glass, the 2020 possesses exceptional balance and tons of character right out of the gate. Exotic scents of blackberry jam, chocolate, new leather, licorice and smoke are so alluring. Imposing tannins need time to soften, but once that happens readers will be treated to a spectacular Apparita that captures all the best the vintage had to offer. Marco Pallanti waited until mid-September (late for the year) to bring in this fruit. That decision paid off handsomely. (Jun 2023) Drink 2027-2045 - 99Pts Antonio Galloni 2015 L’Apparita Ama's 2015 L'Apparita is shaping up to be phenomenal. That is the good news. But readers are going to have to give the 2015 at least another 8-10 years before the wine starts to drink well, as today, the flavors are remarkably primary. That is hardly a surprise given how this Tuscan thoroughbred ages. A rush of blackberry jam, spice, menthol, and graphite build into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures. Over the years, I have had the chance to take virtually every vintage of L'Apparita. There is little doubt the 2015 will soon take its place as one of the epic editions. (July 2018) Drink 2025-2045 - 98Pts Antonio Galloni 2010 L’Apparita Ama's 2010 L'Apparita is super-intriguing from the very first taste. With each passing vintage, it seems like Apparita becomes less about Merlot and more about Ama. Dark red cherries, rose petals, sage, rosemary, tobacco and licorice are some of the many notes that are alive in the glass. Wonderfully nuanced and expressive, the 2010 caresses every corner of the palate with breathtaking intensity and finesse. The 2010 isn't a huge Apparita, rather it is a cool vintage, savory Merlot built for the cellar. (May 2014) Drink 2018-2030 - 96+Pts Antonio Galloni
2020 San Lorenzo Made with a selection of the best estate Sangiovese (with a hint of Merlot and Malvasia Nera) from across various parcels, the Castello di Ama 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is chiseled and dark with a through-line of dark mineral and crushed rock. That dry mineral note forms a precise frame around dark fruit and oak spice. The wine has drying tannins and a long, polished finish. (May 2023) Drink 2024-2038 - 94Pts Monica Larner 2015 San Lorenzo The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo represents a blend of some of the estate's best Sangiovese from vines that are 20 years old and more. You do feel that extra density, intensity and complexity within the very fiber of this beautiful wine. The effect is deep and layered. Castello di Ama is characterized by limestone clay soils mixed with both galestro and alberese marl stones. There is about 60 centimeters of topsoil and compacted clay below that. (Oct 2018) Drink 2019-2035 - 95Pts Monica Larner 2010 San Lorenzo Compared to the 2011 vintage, the 2010 Chianti Classico Vigneto Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is a wine of good depth and focus thanks to the cooler vintage. The bouquet shows standard Chianti Classico aromas of bright fruit and cherry with offbeat tones of Pecorino cheese rind and white chocolate thrown into the mix. In the mouth, it shows extraction and power. (Oct 2014) Drink 2014-2027 - 92Pts Monica Larner 2020 L’Apparita The 2020 L'Apparita opens to a midnight black color and an impenetrable appearance. This Merlot set the benchmark for the grape in Tuscany and continues to do so today, despite the various challenges to an early-ripening variety facing climate change. The 2020 vintage remains rich and opulent, even heavy on the mid-palate, with lots of thick fruit layering and soft tannins. It ends with sweet fruit and barbecue spice. (May 2023) Drink 2024-2040 - 95Pts Monica Larner 2015 L’Apparita It's impossible not to be completely smitten by the 2015 L'Apparita. This pure expression of Merlot from Chianti Classico is an exceedingly smooth and enriched expression with abundant tones of black cherry, spice, chocolate and barbecue smoke. The mouthfeel is gorgeous, and although this wine is not as extracted or dense as past editions, it is far more finessed and elegant. You get a clear taste not only of the grape but of the gravely soils that make up this extraordinary territory. What could be better than Merlot and Tuscany blended together in a single bottle? (Oct 2018) Drink 2019-2035 - 96Pts Monica Larner 2010 L’Apparita The 2010 L’Apparita is a pure expression of Merlot with bold fruit nuances of cherry and black fruit at the core. This vintage is especially sophisticated and fine: Evidently those cooling diurnal shifts during the growing season have contributed to the overall elegance and prestige of this beautiful varietal wine. 2020 San Lorenzo Aromas of black cherries with flowers and sliced dried oranges. Medium-bodied with very tight tannins and a firm and racy finish. Shows polish yet strength. Give this at least four or five years to open. (June 2023) - 95Pts James Suckling 2015 San Lorenzo What first strikes you about the nose is that it offers one of the purest fruit expressions of all the 2015 Gran Seleziones. Blackcurrants, orange and lemon rind, brambleberries, heather, sage, thyme and blackberry leaves are all a feature. The tannins are steely, and the flavors are so savory. The fruit is carried through to the long, chewy finish by the highly refreshing acidity. Drink in 2020. (July 2018) - 95Pts James Suckling 2010 San Lorenzo Wonderful aromas of dried orange peel, cedar and cherries. Some coffee too. Full body with silky tannins and a long finish. A beautiful single-vineyard Chianti Classico. Drink now. (Jun 2014) - 93Pts James Suckling 2020 L’Apparita Beautiful focus with sage and rosemary to the plum and chocolate character. Some green olives, too. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that caress the palate. Just hints of vanilla and dried flowers to the fruit. Pretty texture and length to the wine at the end. Drinkable but better in 2027. (Jun 2023) - 97Pts James Suckling 2015 L’Apparita Aromas of black olives and violets with black fruits following through to a full body with firm and silky tannins. An intense finish. Shows linear yet strong tannins. 100% merlot. Drink in 2020. (July 2018) - 96Pts James Suckling 2010 L’Apparita A classic merlot with blackcurrants, dark chocolate and hints of new wood. Full-bodied, firm and chewy.
