Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2027-2033, Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2026

Coming from a sunnier year, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino Montosoli shows a slightly deeper ruby hue and brings darker red fruit, sweet flowers, and gentle spice to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied and inviting, with a rounder feel than the 2023, ripe tannins, and enough acidity to keep it fresh and nimble. Drink this over the coming 5-7 years. Drink 2027-2033. The wines for this report were tasted at the winery on Montosoli. Baricci is one of the estate’s most important voices on the hill, with six hectares of the 25-hectare Montosoli zone spread across seven distinct parcels. This footprint allows the team to work row by row and highlight the subtle subdivisions of the site, with younger vines from the more fertile, lower-altitude parcels going into the Rosso di Montalcino. The Brunello comes from the marine sedimentary soils surrounded by clay, while the Riserva is selected from the highest point of the hill. In 2020, they were not able to produce Riserva due to low yields from this section of the vineyard, where berry size was also very small, averaging 1.5 grams per berry. Annual production typically hovers around 18,000 bottles, although in 2020 they made closer to 15,000 due to extremely low yields. A new cellar is currently under construction and is scheduled to be operational for the 2026 harvest.

I am a big fan of the Baricci house style that always prizes elegance and lighter shades of Sangiovese. The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Montosoli is a good example of this. The Montosoli location of this estate defines this informal red that leans into dusty mineral notes. These frame a core of ruby cherry and pressed violet. I'd add this to my shortlist of favorite Rossos from this vintage. Production is 16,000 bottles.

More savory than expected, the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Montosoli opens with a blend of rose petals, damp earth, sage and dried strawberries. It rushes the palate with sweet cherry-berry fruits and spice, all guided by juicy acidity. This finishes remarkably fresh with a hard red candy and licorice tinge that lingers.
