Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2026-2032, Jancis Robinson MW, Aug 2024

A south-facing promontory. Marl soils with a higher portion of older vines than in Coste de Rose. Pale ruby, a touch more colour than the Coste di Rose. Dusty, savoury nose with dried redcurrant and cinnamon spice. Firm, gripping tannin. More depth and hold than the Coste di Rose. Spicy finish. Quite classic. (SCJ)

Barolo. First vintage 2019. From contracted fruit. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Subdued on the nose, but already a little evolved with the first hints of tobacco leaf. Oak notes emerge with aeration. Supple, juicy fruit and soft, drying tannins and with a hint of vanilla on the finish. Pleasant, but not overtly complex. (WS)

A ripe ruby color, the 2020 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is incredible on the nose. Initially lightly smoky on opening, it needs a little time to reveal notes of candied roses, wild raspberries, tea leaf, and sweet sage. Medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, a balanced, compact nature, and a velvety texture, it is nicely concentrated, yet with a weightless feel. This is one of the most complete wines I’ve tasted from Vjara to date. It has depth, but with a defined feel, and is long on the palate, with an exceptional finish. It’s going to have a wide drinking window but age at a very slow rate over the next two to three decades. The G.D. Vajra estate is based within the commune of Barolo, with the entire family contributing and Giuseppe and Aldo Vajra at the helm of the winemaking responsibilities. Giuseppe, who took more of a leadership role in 2008, has been instrumental in continuing to develop the family estate, while Isidoro Vajra leads in vineyard management. Most recently they have completed the expansion of their cellar space and offices. They are also now releasing their wines a touch later to allow for additional time in bottle to soften any harsh edges. As of the 2019 vintage, both the G.D. Vajra and Luigi Baudana estates are certified organic.

The G.D. Vajra 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a very pretty wine with brightness and delicate aromas that remain etched and defined. You get dried violet or lilac, tart cherry, cranberry, lavender essence, rosemary and other perfumed Mediterranean nuances. Bricco delle Viole finishes dry, and the tannins are on the powdery side, giving the wine medium weight and a lean mid-palate.
