The 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Bassolino Di Sopra is layered and profound on the nose, with sweet orange, spice, black raspberries, kirsch, and a captivating aromatic depth that’s as good as it gets. The palate is medium to full-bodied and seamless, with velvety tannins, pinpoint acidity, and a level of refinement and length that puts it among the very best wines of the region in 2019. Everything resonates with precision, and it should age effortlessly for decades. Drink 2026-2055. Situated next to the historic Biondi Santi, Jan Hendrik Erbach and his wife Caroline have been consistently raising the bar and making some of the most exceptional wines of the region at Pian Dell'Orino. The wines are held back an additional year or more, depending on when Jan feels the wines are ready to be released. They work biodynamically in the vineyard and make adjustments with regard to production, only permitting what they feel is the best expression of their property to go into the final wines. Each of the wines for this report were tasted at the estate in Montalcino.

A model of dark elegance, floral yet brooding, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra slowly evolves with a blend of balsam herbs, fresh mint and dried cherries. Silky and bassy, it washes across the palate with a dense textural wave of mineral-tinged dark red fruits and exotic spice, energetic yet massive and intense. Its acidity wins the day, leaving the palate remarkably refreshed despite the grippy tannins that linger as clove and tobacco hints slowly fade. Collectors must be patient, as the 2019 will not be released until 2025. No worries, however, because it will be many more years until it reaches its glorious maturity.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra is a model of elegance, power and complexity. This displays a blend of crushed rocks and balsam herbs, giving way to notes of dried violet, fresh mint and black cherry. It's silken and serene, washing across the palate with waves of mineral-tinged dark red fruits and exotic spice, all guided by a core of tantalizing acidity. Despite its depth and concentration, this finishes remarkably fresh, with grippy tannins lingering under an air of clove and tobacco. Classic to the core, the Bassolino di Sopra is coming along beautifully yet still many years away from its drinking window. Look out for 2019, which will be released in the spring of 2026.
