Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2025-2039, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2022

The 2018 Barbaresco Ovello is a powerful, searing wine. Then again, this is Ovello. It shows a bit more depth than the other wines, while very much retaining the nervy personality of this site. Red-fleshed fruit, orange peel, spice and mint lend tons of nuance to this exotic, layered Barbaresco. The 2018 was aged in a new Stockinger cask. There is a hint of new oak sweetness, but it actually works quite well in the wine's fabric.

Showing subtle and sweet fruit, the 2018 Barbaresco Ovello is all about softness and silkiness. Starting off shy, the wine grows in intensity with time in the glass. It shows good structure and stays gripped to the palate thanks to the well-integrated tannins. There is pretty mineral definition as well, but ultimately the wine is fleshed out by the softness and its accessible fruit.

Barbaresco.  Pale ruby. Very closed and tightly knit with complex minerally notes underneath. Layers of ripe red fruit with very fine, polished tannins and finely balanced by supple acidity. Very long but still embryonic. (WS)
