Monforte d’Alba. Almost impenetrable deep ruby with brickstone rim. A nose clearly marked by age, with mushroom and undergrowth and lifted balsamic fruit. Complex. Velvety fresh palate laced with grainy tannins. Lovely balance and freshness but not the loudest of Barolo and clearly ageing. (WS)

Dark ruby. Prunotto's 1999 Barolo Bussia is a brooding, backward effort with a smoky, earthy nose and a core of sweet dark fruit on a big, structured frame that expresses the powerful personality of the vintage. Mentholated, balsamic and tarry notes gradually appear as this pretty Barolo sits in the glass. It should drink well until age 25, perhaps beyond.
The 1999 Barolo Bussia is perhaps the best yet made under Antinori stewardship. A dark garnet, very potent and penetrating on the nose with excellent, well defined rose petal, vanilla, cinnamon, and wild fennel notes, its muscular body and sizeable extract are balanced by the ripeness of the fruit and the velvet of the texture, the grip and focus of the finish.
