The 2011 Barolo Riserva Bussia is a powerful, pleasantly rustic wine that is quite marked by the warm year. Leather, smoke, tobacco, licorice and game shape this bold, explosive Barolo. Although the 2011 remains a bit rough around the edges, it is also pleasing in its own way. I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later.

The 2011 Barolo Bussia Sergio Barale is an exuberant and rich wine, albeit a slightly simple one compared to cooler vintages of Nebbiolo. The bouquet opens to robust layers of dark fruit and plum, with distant strawberry and dried raspberry at the back. The texture here is thicker and denser with some mild grittiness on the tannins.
Tasted blind. Monforte d’Alba. Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Dark, brooding and malty nose. Rich, supple fruit supported by grainy tannins. Seems a tiny bit stewed, but the finish is nevertheless complex and long. (WS)
Monforte d’Alba. Maturing ruby with orange rim. Balsamic nose that seems a little locked on the fruit. Compact palate with a muscular structure. A little austere still, but well balanced and not without elegance. (WS)
