2009 Barolo Carobric

Ruby with brick tones at the rim. Much more herbal and cedary than the Monvigliero. Smells cooler and less ripe. Silky, elegant – already! Though no sign of premature development. On the lighter side but persists to a long finish without being demonstrative.  (JH)

With fruit from Catiglione Falletto and La Morra, the 2009 Barolo Carobric shares similar qualities with the Barolo Bricco Ambrogio. The dry, astringent tannins need time to anchor to the texture and consistency of the wine, but there’s not much flesh for them to grip to. Delicate fruit tones of red currant and dried raspberries do add nicely to the low-key bouquet. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022. The Scavino family (Enrico and his daughters Enrica and Elisa) carry forth an important family legacy with a wide range of cru-specific wines that brilliantly exhibit individual styles – despite all being made by the same hands. The 2009 Barolo Carobric is focused, centered and nicely structured. A solid core of expressive dark red fruit opens up in the glass, followed by sweet floral and minty notes develop over time. In 2009, the Carobric stands out for lift, vibrancy and brightness, all qualities that are highly appealing. Another year or two should help the tannins to soften. This is another relatively delicate Barolo, but the balance is terrific.
