Aged in botti for two years, the Brezza 2019 Barolo Sarmassa was initially closed when I tasted it and took a little extra time to find focus. It offers medium-plus intensity and nice definition. However, it does evolve nicely in the glass, going from primary fruit to savory spice and tobacco. These results are quite elegant, and you will especially appreciate the finesse of the mouthfeel. Production is 5,982 bottles plus 283 magnums.

Barolo. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Deeper and more imposing than the Castellero, with perfumed red fruit. Seductive, perfumed fruit on the palate and with fine, chewy tannins. Grows on you. (WS)
The 2019 Barolo Sarmassa is another impressive wine in this range from Brezza. A rich, virile Barolo, the Sarmassa packs a serious punch. Black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice, mocha, sage and underbrush flesh out in the glass. The 2019 is wonderfully deep and expansive, with tremendous palate presence and tons of character. What a wine!
The 2019 Barolo Riserva Sarmassa is beguiling, but it is also the sort of Barolo that needs many, many years to be at its finest. Searing tannins make themselves immediately felt. This powerhouse, explosive Barolo is long on character. When it might actually be ready to drink is another question entirely. It is a wine for readers who can be patient.
