The 2016 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with raspberry, crushed strawberry and briary aromas, very well defined and focused, perhaps understated compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sharp and bracing opening, fresh and saline in the mouth with spicy black fruit towards the finish that exhibits a mote of VA. Something here reminiscent of Japanese nori? Fine. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy.

The 2016 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a perfumed, rose petal-scented bouquet with red cherries and just a light smudge of vanilla. The palate is soft, forward and expressive, nicely balanced with a fleshy, almost pastille-like finish. Fine, although I would like more complexity and mineralité to come through on the finish.
Firm, pale crimson. Light, slightly vegy nose with excellent suave fruit on the palate with fine tannins and much more ambition than the Clos de la Rougeotte. Lots to savour here. Quite long. (JR)
