Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2021-2031, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2020

Chiarlo’s 2016 Barolo Tortoniano is a fabulous wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. A burst of sweet red berry fruit gives the 2016 so much immediacy and overall appeal. Rose petal, mint, spice and cedar build as the 2016 opens with a bit of time in the glass. The 2016 is such a pretty wine.

The 2016 Barolo Tortoniano is an accessible and forthcoming wine that gives you the complexity and nuance of the Nebbiolo grape with a fruit-forward and food-friendly personality. There is a dry and astringent quality to the tannins that might need to smooth itself out with a few more years of cellar aging. Otherwise, the wine would pair with ravioli stuffed with minced meat and topped with extra cheese.

Tasted blind. Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Brooding fruit with a hint of leather, which lifts with aeration. Juicy fruit that is still pretty much closed on the palate. Lots of coating tannins and compact finish with great acidity. Closes up and needs more time. (WS)
