The 2005 Barolo Campè is an attractive wine that has begun to soften nicely while retaining good freshness. Even so, the 2005 remains a bit compact, which was one of my initial concerns when the wine was first released. Lavender, rose petal, new leather and spice add nuance through the expressive finish. This is one of the more primary, fruit-driven 2005 Barolos readers will come across. Stylistically, the 2005 belongs to a previous period in the estate's history when French oak played a greater role than it does today. The 2005 should drink well for the next decade.

Good full red. Highly nuanced nose melds redcurrant, menthol, truffle, marzipan, dried flowers and spicy oak. Then sweet, creamy and surprisingly open-knit, with very good depth and complexity to the flavors of strawberry and dried flowers. The floral quality and an herbal element give lift to this very fresh wine. Rivetti told me he carried out three green harvests in 2005, which allowed him to bring in fully ripe fruit before the damaging early October rains.
La Spinetta's 2005 Barolo Campe' is a soft, mid-weight offering redolent of sweet red cherries, spices and herbs. In this vintage the Campe' comes across as quite slender and lacking the richness that previous vintages have shown. Because of the wine's modest structure, a kick of alcohol on the finish is especially noticeable. Persistent notes of greenness also detract from the wine's overall balance.

Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. I continue to be impressed with the fervor with which proprietor Giorgio Rivetti pursues his new business ventures. Rivetti has recently set up a new importation business to handle his wines and those of a select number of producer-friends. Given that Rivetti has succeeded in eliminating at least one layer of cost from his own wines, it would have been nice to see him pass at least a portion of those saving along to consumers.
