Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2019-2030, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2015

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru les Rugiens from Domaine de Montille has a very composed, quite refined bouquet that might be on the conservative side, but has a pleasant herbaceous quality. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and well judged acidity, a drop of balsamic towards the finish but displaying decent length. This is a Pommard that doesn't want to put a foot wrong and remains on the safe side, though I wager that it will repay cellaring and approach my banded score from barrel with four to five years in bottle.

(one-third vendange entier): Good dark red. Black cherry aroma complicated by iron and meaty nuances. Sweet and saline on the palate, with a chewy intensity and subtle soil character to the red cherry and mineral flavors. Broad, supple and very suave on the long aftertaste, which features serious dusty tannins and considerable incipient complexity.

Savory herbs, wild flowers, mint and black fruit all take shape in the 2012 Pommard Les Rugiens. The aromatics are nicely lifted, while there is plenty of vintage 2012 fruit and tannin to fill out the wine's frame. Here it is the wine's balance that impresses most of all.

One-third whole bunch, 30% new oak. 45-year-old vines. Rich and round and quite animal but great texture and stuffing. (JR)
