Note di degustazione
The 2014 Rosso Di Montalcino is holding its own nine years later and offers a lot of pleasure for this vintage, which was largely written off. The wine is medium-bodied, with a medium garnet and ruby hue, super fine tannins, and fresh acidity. It is expressive within its more linear nature, although it retains elegant notes of wild strawberry, herbes de Provence, orange rind, and wet stone. It is likely past the point of improving, but it has several more years in it. Drink 2023-2028. Located in the southeastern area of Montalcino in Castellnuova dell’Abate, Stella and her family purchased the once-abandoned winery of San Giuseppe in 1992. They have been certified organic since 1996 and certified biodynamic since 2005. Two of her vineyards, Vigna Tondino and Vigna Quercie, were planted three years ago with massal selection, on soils that are rich with iron and see no irrigation or fertilization. She also has a new vineyard where she implemented a drainage system in the Etruscan model, with the existing stones and canes, and zero plastic. This system is meant to work in conjunction with her use of fava beans as cover crops, which help to promote air circulation under the soil. In Stella’s view, the use of fertilizers slows down the expression of the vineyard and its underlying soils.

The bouquet on the 2014 Rosso di Montalcino Libero keeps me coming back to the glass over and over again, with a display that is exotic and more savory than sweet. Depths of red currants, autumnal spice, balsam herbs and an enriching and warming note of walnut wafts up with ease. This is juicy to the core, washing across the palate with prominently soft textures that are nicely offset by sour-citrus tinged tart cherry, while taking on rosy florals toward the close. A burst of inner sweetness comes through in the finish, perfectly offset by sultry minerality and earth tones, as nuances of plum seem to last for well over a minute. There’s an immediate and mature feel to the 2014 Libero, yet the pleasure factor is off the charts, and the wine is full of life, nearly meditative. It’s not quite Rosso, nor is it Brunello, having spent 42 months in 17-hectoliter botti and three years in bottle. Any way you look at it, this is a very special wine born off an idiosyncratic vintage from Stella di Campalto. Drink heartily!!! (EG)
Stella di Campalto likes to give little nicknames for her wines. The 2014 Rosso di Montalcino is her "vino non vino" (the wine that is not a wine). The reason is because this Rosso appears so feather light, fleeting and ephemeral. In truth, this sums up Stella's carefully contemplated house style, but this vintage takes that elegance to a new level. Despite the thin fabric of the wine, this Rosso shows tight inner energy and tension from within. Subtle forest berry and blue flower aromas are held in place by the wine's fresh acidity. Including this wine, the estate's total production is about 10,000 bottles per year.
