Mid crimson. Splashy impact on the nose – very vibrant. Massive fruit, though certainly not simple. Sweetly pretty and full of explosive fruit. More substance than the village wine though no more charming at this stage. (JR)

The 2010 Volnay 1er Cru comes across as rich, dark and seductive. Black cherries, spices, menthol and licorice are some of the many nuances that emerge from this deeply pitched, textured Volnay. This is another totally gorgeous wine. The 1er Cru is made from parcels in Mitans and Pitures.

They are the product of a year that saw yields lowered by 40-50% on average. It was quite a shock to see the domain’s cellars with so few barrels in them. As always, the wines were made with fully de-stemmed fruit. I will report on the 2009s in the April issue. Importer: Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, Napa CA; tel. (707) 299-2600
Almost a warm-climate feel to this fruit – overripe, powerful and baked. Retains acidity though, and there’s no confection to this. Zingy and lively, despite the all-powerful fruit. (RH)

Marquis d'Angerville is synonymous with the village of Volnay, having long made some of the village’s finest wines. Best known for its Premier Cru monopole vineyard, Clos des Ducs, this estate crafts fine-boned, elegant styles of Pinot Noir – wines that act as standard-bearers for the appellation.
