In January 2016, the Altare family purchased the 900-square-meter plot in Serralunga d'Alba that makes this wine. They had been renting it since 2000, and average annual bottle production is around 6,000 units. The 2011 Barolo Cerretta Vigna Bricco is a dark, layered and exuberant Nebbiolo. You really smell the earth here with truffle, rust, dried blood and iron. The core of the wine is fitted with thick layers of black fruit. This is a muscular and powerful rendition to put in the cellar.

Serralunga d’Alba. Altare always release their Ceretta two years later than other producers, treating it as a de facto Riserva. Deep ruby with orange tinges. Perfect marriage of oak and fruit, denser than the normale Barolo and with a hint of that Serralunga spice. Fine but brick-house-like tannins, gorgeous balance and length and the 15% alcohol is not noticeable. (WS)
The muscle and power of Serralunga comes through in spades in the 2011 Barolo Cerretta. Firm tannins run through a core of expressive dark black fruit, smoke, melted road tar and a host of balsamic-inflected notes flow through to the intense finish.
