Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2018-2028, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2008 Barolo Big 'd Big is a dark, inward wine. Smoke, licorice, tobacco and smoke add complexity to the seriously intense core of dark red fruit. This is the most muscular and sinewy of the 2008 Baroli from Rocche dei Manzoni. The Big doesn't have the early appeal of some of the other wines, but it should age quite well. The sheer integrity of the fruit is striking, as is the huge, dramatic finish. Hints of iron and tar linger in the empty glass.

Good bright, saturated red. Lower-toned and less expressive on the nose than the Rocche, with strong chocolatey oak currently overshadowing aromas of earth, menthol and minerals. Sweeter and deeper in the mouth, revealing an emerging hint of medicinal black cherry. A bit youthfully disjointed today, finishing with mouthclenching, slightly spiky tannins and very good length. This very young wine has excellent potential.
