Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2024-2034, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2024

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is the most reserved of the wines in this short vertical, which comes as no surprise in this cooler vintage. However, it is also darker fruited compared to the others, which is more noteworthy, with notes of cracked pepper, black raspberries, and fresh flowers. Overall, it floats on the palate with a graceful feel, fine tannins, and a stony finish. A lovely wine, it’s drinking well now and will drink well over the coming 8-10 years.

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is broad, ample and so expressive, all while showing the finesse and classicism that are such a signature of this wine. All elements are so well balanced in a Barolo that speaks to harmony above all else. Sweet red cherry, cedar, orange peel, tobacco and cinnamon give the 2018 tons of aromatic presence. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well with minimal cellaring. It's a gorgeous wine in every way.

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero shows a beautiful signature of pressed violets, rose garden, white stone, crushed peppercorn and grilled rosemary. The wine is smooth and soft in texture, yet it feels stitched up and firm at the back thanks to the support it gets from those balanced tannins. This wine should hold 20 years or more.

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero has good depth, but is otherwise pretty unexpressive. Sweet floral and spice notes emerge, but only with great reluctance. Readers will have to be patient. It will be interesting to see how this shows post-bottling. The Monvigliero is, uncharacteristically, the most reticent of these wines today.
