The 2017 Volnay Caillerets 1er Cru has a well-defined, quite introverted nose that gradually opens, revealing a light but welcome herbaceous note. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and crisp, with fine-grained tannins and fine acidity. This attenuates slightly toward the finish but delivers a sense of drive and energy. The 2017 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru contains two-thirds whole bunches addition. It has a brisk, brine-tinged bouquet of vibrant fruit; there is good attack here, one of the most penetrating of Leroux's reds. The palate is supple and rounded, the whole bunch completely disguised, and delicate veins of black pepper and brine run through the harmonious, almost voluptuous finish. Excellent - but quite rich for a Cailleret.
60% whole bunch. Barrel sample. Mid crimson. Peppery and savoury on the nose, much more mineral than just simple fruit though there’s no lack of that. It’s ripe and dark and so fresh. Chalky texture and surprising red-fruit sweetness on the palate – different from the nose. Chalky but supple. (JH)
