FINE+RARE, Nov 2022

Bouchard has 0.89 hectares on the Puligny side, with some prestigious neighbours including Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The vines are up to 70 years old, lending additional concentration to this Grand Cru. The nose is mineral and creamy, with air revealing more honeyed tones and delicate white blossom, alongside firmer citrus. There is such power and density to this wine, which is a true Grand Cru. As Frédéric Weber said to us, “Its presence is incredible.”

The 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru has an elegant bouquet that opens in the glass with crushed stone and light oily/resinous scents, nuanced yet focused with glimpses of tropical fruit though it never impedes. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, precise and mineral-driven. There is an understated element in this "Monty" that is very appealing and it feels reassuringly persistent on the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru is half the normal volume, pruned just before the frost with a massive number of candles, therefore it managed to produce 20hL/ha despite everything. This is unequivocally a step up from the Chevalier-Montrachet with greater definition and poise, more energy. The palate is well balanced with fine detail, light wild peach and citrus notes, fine mineralité with satisfying tension on the finish. Excellent.
