2018 Volnay Champans

The 2018 Volnay Champans 1er Cru has a slightly smudged bouquet, predominantly black fruit, earthy with just a touch of stewed plum. The palate is a little fresher than Olivier Leflaive's Champan thanks to the acidity. A little heady in style but with good depth and grip. A touch of pepperiness comes through on the almost Grenache-like finish. Not bad, though it doesn't exactly urge me to return for another sip. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.
