2019 Volnay Carelle Sous la Chapelle

The 2019 Volnay Sous La Chapelle 1er Cru, made with 100% whole bunch and matured in 40% new oak, has a lovely, slightly ferrous bouquet of mixed red and black fruit, with a hint of hickory thrown in for good measure. The palate is medium-bodied and savory on the entry, a little feral compared to other Volnays, revealing a dash of white pepper and clove toward the finish. Perhaps one of the earlier-drinking Volnays. Apparently this really suffered with the drought, and I think hydric stress sapped it of a little energy.
