Melted tannins, old school in the best possible way, white truffles, smoked earth, soy, broth, tea leaf, crushed raspberries, saline, huge persistency drawing to a whisper on the finish. Same blend, incidentally, as Tignanello, with the first vintage in 1970, making it almost the same age - and it was born out of a friendship between Piero Antinori of Tignanello and the Mazzei family of Fonterutoli.

The Mazzei 1990 Concerto di Fonterutoli comes from a vintage that was seen as very successful, with a dry winter followed by consistent temperatures through the spring to accompany the development of the canopy and the grapes. It led to good phenolic ripening at harvest. However, this wine appears more reticent or closed at the beginning, and you need extra time to get it going. Once it does, it offers earthy and ferrous aromas, and you get traces of the toasted oak over fine tannins. Our library sample was perhaps more closed than usual, although the grace and finesse of the wine came through nonetheless.
