Yields were particularly low in Volnay in 2021 for Boillot, at just 8hl/ha. Although volumes are low, this is an utterly charming wine – scented and bright with a nose full of summer-fresh strawberries. Very pale ruby in colour, it is pure and juicy with a moreish minerality that fills the vibrant finish. Delicate and fine-boned Volnay.

The 2021 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru has a focused and detailed nose with a mixture of red and black fruit, quite tight and a little more marine-driven than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, pastille-like purity, raspberry and blackcurrant and a touch of spice. Fine and cohesive with just the right amount of grip on the finish, this Volnay should give a decade of drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
The 2021 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru is bright and focused, very much on the lighter side, as is the case with the reds this year. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, white pepper, rose petals and cinnamon add lovely aromatic top notes. There is Nebbiolo-like tension to the Fremiets that might not be exactly what Burgundy drinkers are looking for. - Antonio Galloni
