Fontanafredda offers a steely and streamlined 2012 Barolo. At the outset, you may notice some ripe fruit layers of blackberry and dried cherry. Those heavier notes blow off to reveal licorice, rose hip, cola and grilled herb. This is a Barolo that has been constructed with simple lines and a fresh approach. It needs another five to ten years of bottle aging before it begins to show its inner complexity.

Mid ruby with orange tinges. Herbal but otherwise firmly locked on the nose. Light, sweet strawberry fruit with a little hole on the mid palate and with a touch of tannin on the finish. (WS)
