The Grand Cru whites from Bouchard are all brilliant. It is hard to choose a favourite but the Chevalier’s complexity, balance and minerality is impossible to resist. Bouchard owns 2.3 hectares of this seven-hectare Grand Cru and are the only domaine to have vines on the four varying terraces of the vineyard, offering the most complete rendition of this famous site. The nose is deep and mineral, with restrained citrus oil aromas. The palate has a wonderfully taut structure with dried apricot, mandarin and yellow apple fruit notes. The palate has incredible depth, rich and creamy in texture but never losing that mineral grip. The finish is silky, saline, zesty and exceptionally long.

The 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is an outstanding wine. Compared to Bruno Colin, it offers more mineralité and terroir expression on the nose. Very focused with palpable energy, this is wonderful. The palate is beautifully balanced with pure white stone fruit, a killer line of acidity and stunning sapidity on the finish. So much energy is coiled up in this wine, and this will ensure that it ages in bottle. Proper. Grand. Cru. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

BP&F own all of 2.5 ha of this 7-ha vineyard. Plots on each of the four terraces which are vinified separately and blended only at the end. They are incredibly different apparently. The first is flat, just above Montrachet: rich, dense and a sometimes a bit Riesling-like. The second terrace gives elegance. Third terrace is very hard and rocky but sunny so matures grapes well. Fourth terrace is small but produces very tight, precise, mineral wine. Weber foresees very long ageing potential. Much more fragile and evanescent than the Corton-Charlemagne that was provided in the same collection of 10-cl tasting samples. But it certainly builds on the savoury, persistent finish. Almost grand cru weight…! Certainly had admirable presence in the mouth and on the finish. This would disappoint no one except perhaps someone who was counting the pennies… (JR)
