Abrigo's 2016 Barbaresco Meruzzano is a rich, heady wine. Smoke, tobacco, leather, licorice, dried herbs, menthol and melted road tar give the 2016 a distinctly brooding feel that also comes through in the wine's imposing tannins and inward feel. Readers should expect a potent, virile Barbaresco that needs time in bottle to shed some of its considerable tannin. There is a lot to look forward to in this stellar Barbaresco from Abrigo.

Here’s a very opulent but tuned-in Barbaresco. It packs in a plethora of dried blackberries, tar and creme caramel into a surprisingly balanced nose. Very, very powerful on the palate, which is saturated in dark plums and ripe, chewy tannins. It might be too assertive for some, but this will soften and delight, if you give it time in the bottle to mature. Drink from 2024.

This wine opens to richness and a dark crimson appearance. The 2016 Barbaresco Meruzzano makes a big impact in terms of concentration and density, with aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant and plum. This Barbaresco is also heavy and thick in the mouth with evident tannin structure and more black fruit intensity on the finish. It is intense enough to even hold up to a bagna càuda, Piedmont's legendary garlic-and-anchovy dip for raw vegetables. The vines are a bit younger here at 20 years old. Some 10,000 bottles were made.

Treiso. Tasted blind. Dark ruby. Brooding and subdued with a faint, creamy note. Tight, embryonic palate with finely integrated acidity that goes on and on together with the fine-grained tannins. Needs more time. (WS)
