Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2025-2040, Neal Martin, Dec 2023

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is showing some SO2 on the nose, but underneath there is a very good Grand Cru. Will it get a chance to shine? The reduction drills down with aeration rather than ebbing off, which is vexing. The palate is viscous on the entry, a little worked in the winery and quite phenolic, with candied orange peel flanked by apricot and cashews. Spicy toward the finish, it just lacks a bit of brightness and tension. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

More tightly wound than the Bienvenues, the 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with aromas of pear, confit citrus, fresh pastry, nutmeg, hazelnuts and beeswax, framed by a deft touch of youthful reduction. Full-bodied, deep and tensile, with huge levels of concentration and extract, it's layered and muscular, with a seamless, structured profile and a long, saline finish.

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from purchased must courtesy of 60-year-old vines that have been organically grown for 20 years. It has a superb bouquet of mineral-rich citrus fruit that puts the Bienvenues in the shade. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, concentrated and grippy in the mouth, delivering intense citrus notes laced with quince and hints of apricot toward the finish. Superb. Four barrels produced.
