The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru does not quite have the same composure as Jacques Carillon's Perrières that precedes it. This is spicier, with a little smokiness, and there is a bit of alcohol blurring the edges. That said, it does gain more composure with time in the glass, and some mineralité does come through. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly oily/resinous entry, moderate depth and ample power. As such, like some of the other Pulignys, it is missing a bit of tension on the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru is a little steelier, maybe slightly more malic on the nose compared to the Champ Canet. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, slightly waxy in texture with hints of white pepper towards the finish that just dips before the finish line and loses a point. But otherwise this is very fine.
Light nose again. Positively flirtatious attack – a real charmer! That great JMB balance between ripe fruit and seductive smokiness. Pretty assertive on the persistent finish. Pure pleasure! Even if it may be too much fun for purists as it should mature fairly quickly. (JR)
