FINE+RARE, Oct 2020

This is a mesmerising village wine. It’s sourced from three lieux-dits – Les Meix Goudard, Blanchot Dessous and En Journoblot – all of which surround Grand Cru Criots Bâtard Montrachet. The nose is richer and creamier in comparison to the Saint-Aubins, offering riper stone-fruit, but it’s still pithy and taut with a mineral-driven finish. Think greengage rather than yellow plum, with shiny red apple running through its core. There’s a beautiful balance between its rich fruit and salinity.

A completely different aromatic profile presents notes of resin, orange peel, pear and a whiff of petrol. The delicious and attractively textured medium weight flavors are not especially dense but do offer fine depth and persistence on the punchy finale. This plump effort should drink well early yet also be capable of rewarding 5 to 8 years of development. (Heart - Outstanding)

Another cuvée that mandates a comparatively early harvest is the 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Village, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and fleshy wine that's bright and saline, with good cut to balance its generosity of fruit. This is already showing very well.

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has a light, slightly chalky bouquet, more Puligny than Chassagne in style. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite saline and surprisingly malic given the growing season. Fine tension and energy on the finish, this is classy Chassagne not a million miles away from Sébastien Caillat’s in style.
