The 2014 Barolo Castelletto is another very pretty wine from Manzone. Orange peel, rose petal, rosemary, star anise, mint and kirsch give the 2014 a slightly exotic quality that is hugely appealing. The 2014 is already quite expressive and giving. It should drink well for another 15-20 years, maybe more.

Giovanni Manzone's 2014 Barolo Castelletto is a more generous and robust wine compared to many of its peers from this cool vintage. This expression offers compelling aromas of dark fruit, prune and spice. The delivery is smooth and silky. The wine is, however, marked by a toasted note of spice and tar that comes from the oak. That will take a few more years to better integrate. Only 5,500 bottles were produced.
Monforte d’Alba. Tasted blind. Tank sample. Maturing mid ruby with bricky rim. Balsamic with hints of cardamom pod and savoury notes. A little minty too. Spicy cherry fruit with coating tannins. Really builds a unity on the finish. (WS)
Monforte d’Alba. Just mid crimson. Cool, sweetly perfumed cherry and more pronounced than their Gramolere of the same vintage. Much less forward on the palate, but ends very poised and with complex tannins. Super-elegant, long, lithe and transparent. Flattering oak note on the finish. (WS)
