This has an expressive, almost exuberant nose with toffee, honey, vanilla and hazelnut aromas shooting from the glass. The palate is equally impressive, with honeyed fruit, crystallised citrus and honeydew melon notes. Despite the concentration and ripe fruit character, the wine retains amazing levels of acidity. Winemaker Barnier claims Folatières’s slightly cooler site provided an added freshness in 2019. A highlight in Jadot’s line-up of whites this year.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Folatières 1er Cru has a veneer of creamy new oak on the nose, though it seems complimentary to the fruit. Eventually, exotic marzipan and crème brûlée scents begin to make their presence felt and obscure the terroir. The palate is rounded on the entry, clearly a concentrated wine, although sufficient acidity binds it together and maintains tension. Weighty and assertive, it is not a subtle Puligny but thoroughly enjoyable for all its faults. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) has also turned out very well in bottle, delivering an inviting bouquet of citrus zest and white currants mingled with notions of buttered popcorn, white flowers and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's rich but vibrant, with a deep core of fruit and a tangy spine of acidity.
