La Morra. Concentrated ruby with orange rim. Lifted cherry and oak nose. Ripe fruit palate loaded with oak that adds to the tannic charge on the finish. Really brash and a little upfront, but the fruit holds up. A little too popular for my taste and not very original, but will come round with time. (WS)

Of Renato Ratti's new releases, the 2011 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata seems to have been hit hardest by the vintage heat. The bouquet is weighed down by pungent tones of ripe fruit and black cherry. Vanilla, spice, leather, cured meat and licorice are added nuances that you will recognize in supporting roles at the back. The mouthfeel is simple and somewhat one-dimensional with thick lines and rich consistency.
Mid ruby. Some rust on the rim. Intense and well balanced. Very forward with the tannins almost entirely covered by ripe fruit. Big and bold. Not especially fine but with lots to give. (JR)
Sweeter and more lifted than the Conca, the 2011 Rocche dell'Annunziata shows all of its signatures, but they are amped up to the maximum in this vintage. There is no shortage of depth and pure power here. The early approachability of La Morra meets the volutuosness of the year in Ratti's 2011 Rocche dell'Annunziata.
