Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2023-2033, Jeb Dunnuck, Apr 2019

Another one of the gems in the lineup is the 2017 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru, a more upfront, powerful wine compared to the more inward Puligny-Montrachet Les Chalumeaux. Crushed citrus, white peach, crushed rocks, celery seed, and a beautiful salinity all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, juicy, layered, incredibly pure and layered white that does everything right. It also needs air to show at its best, and I suspect won’t hit prime time for another 4-5 years, but it should evolve beautifully over the following decade or more.

Matrot's 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes was still a little shut down, having been bottled last week, but with coaxing it offers up a textbook nose of dried white flowers, fresh pears, buttered apples and mint. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny textured and pure with brisk acids and a deep, tight-knit core.

(picked on August 29, the first day of the harvest here; no new oak was used for the Meursault premier crus): Pale bright yellow. Reticent nose dominated by yellow peach flesh, with subtle notes of herbs and flowers emerging with air. Ripe and supple but also with a firm spine of acidity to give precision to the middle palate. Not a fleshy wine but displays the most thrust and length to this point, with its persistent finish hinting at the volume of the vintage. The yield here was no higher than 50 hectoliters per hectare, according to Elsa Matrot. Very well done. Incidentally, Thierry Matrot expressed the opinion that "2017s picked before the rain can show real class," and this wine is a good example.
