Tank sample. Smokily reductive like the Clavoillon, possibly even more so, though more focus on the mineral. Deeper and more intense too. Definitely worth the premium for greater length and likely longevity. (JH)

The 2016 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Pucelles has a more flamboyant bouquet compared to the Champs Gain and Les Clavoillons, just a slight reduction here but there are plenty of citrus fruits laced with orange pith and wet slate that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a Chablis-like, slate-tinged opening. There is an intriguing sense of reserve to this Pucelles and yet the finish is undeniably sustained, a subtle spicy edge lingering for 30 seconds after the wine has departed. This Pucelles has something up its sleeve for those prepared to cellar it for four to six years.
