Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2013-2017, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2001 Barolo is gorgeous. I didn't taste a lot of entry-level Baroli for this article, so it is hard to have a huge frame of reference, but there is no question the 2001 has aged beautifully. Sweet red cherries, flowers, mint, tobacco and spices flesh out in this generous Barolo. The 2001 has put on body in bottle while maintaining considerable freshness, both of which are quite welcome. What a great surprise.

The 2001 Barolo normale, a dark ruby, reveals aromas of toasted oak, spices and sweet fruit, followed by flavors of ripe red fruit with good overall length. Today the wine is very shut down and inexpressive, perhaps owing to an exuberant use of barrique, but it seems promising.

Red-ruby. Raspberry, redcurrant, spices and deep nutty oak, plus a note of Burgundian underbrush. Sweet, lush and rich, with an impressively glyceral texture and noteworthy intensity. Superripe and expressive, with flavors of red berries, licorice and chocolate truffle. Very expressive from the outset. A terrific normale
