The 2008 Barolo Riserva has barely budged since I tasted it a year ago. While so many other 2008 Barolos are built on perfume and grace, Fantino's 2008 Riserva has those qualities, along with a surprising amount of pure, unbridled power. This uber-classic, deceptively mid-weight Barolo packs a serious punch. A host of sweet cherry, sage, lavender, tobacco and smoke meld into the building, intense finish.

The 2008 Barolo Cascina Dardi-Bussia is gorgeous. Freshly cut roses, spices, raspberries and licorice burst from the glass in this expressive Barolo. The firm, saline finish adds brightness and serves to balance the wine's juiciness. Hard candy and flowers linger on the expressive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. These are two delicious Baroli from Alessandro Fantino, one of Piemonte's most overlooked growers. Readers may recall that in the past Fantino bottled two versions of his Barolo, one for the US market and one for the rest of the world. Today Fantino makes just one Barolo, plus his Riserva, which means the wines will be the same in all markets. No American importer.
