2015 Barolo La Serra

This is one of favourites: the single vineyard 2015 Barolo La Serra is a beautiful wine. Whilst still a baby, it shows all the trademarks that the La Serra vineyard in La Morra is known for: distinct beautiful floral perfume, elegant minerality and a tannic grip in its youth that will give it amazing structure for long ageing. James Suckling has just deemed the 2015 a perfect wine and sums up the style well: "Astonishing power and richness. Austerity with class." This kind of vineyard, in the hands of other producers, can produce austere, tannic wines that are hard to approach in their youth. Voerzio, however, with his high density planting, extreme green harvests and gentle approach in the winery, makes Barolos that are near peerless in quality, with extraordinary depth, complexity and finesse. Voerzio removes whole bunches from his vines and even trims what little is left, meaning some of the lowest yields in Piedmont. The quality of what is made from them is absolutely world-class, but production is minuscule as a result. 2015 was a stellar vintage in the Barolo and all signs point to the wines from this vintage developing into some of the finest ever made at the estate, with the La Serra leading the pack.
