FINE+RARE

The 2017 Montrachet is arguably Louis Latour’s finest vintage to date – rewarded its highest score ever by leading Burgundy critic Allen Meadows (Burghound). This Grand Cru perfectly shows the upward trajectory at Louis Latour, where quality has vastly improved in the last decade. The fruit comes entirely from the Puligny side of Montrachet – a 0.8-hectare plot that runs from the very top to the bottom of the slope in the vineyard’s central section. The vines have an average age of 40 years, with the yield just 35hl/ha in 2017. The wine is barrel fermented and aged for 10-12 months in 100% new French oak barrels made by Louis Latour’s own cooperage.

This too is very aromatically restrained with its elegant if timid aromas of essence of pear, apple, citrus, spice, pain grillé and exotic tea. Here too there is outstanding volume to the dense, concentrated and powerful flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that, in much the same way as the Bâtard, imparts a borderline chewy quality to the hugely long and super-complex finale. This is marvelous and also packed with excellent potential.

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with notes of ripe, smoky orchard fruit, mandarin and a generous framing of classy new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad and layered, with good depth and structuring extract that frames its ripe, gourmand core of fruit, concluding with a saline finish. This is a promising but comparatively extrovert offering.
