Totally calcareous soils on steep slopes are perched in front of the Giovanni Rosso winery at an elevation of 350-390 m. Mid brick red. Heady and very substantial. Lots of concentration here. Still pretty tannic. I would keep this quite a while. (JR)

The 2013 Barolo La Serra is laced with the essence of kirsch, spice, new leather, tobacco, licorice and menthol. High-toned and aromatically expressive the La Serra will drink well with minimal cellaring because of its soft, mid-weight structure. Beams of tannin extend the finish nicely. If opened young, the 2013 needs a few hours of air for the slightly volatile notes in the bouquet to dissipate. Overall, the 2013 is a bit eccentric, but it is well done.
Serralunga d'Alba. Cask sample. Concentrated mid crimson. Much less fruit-driven and opulent than the Serralunga, and more poised. Succulent fruit tempered by firm yet ripe Serralunga tannins. Huge aromatic length and lots of bite and structure. Amazing purity of fruit and bags of it. Amazing balance and power. (WS)
