100% Nebbiolo. Alfredo Prunotto founded his business in 1922, and was one of Piemonte’s most dynamic exporters until his retirement in 1956. The company passed then to Prunotto’s friend Beppe Colla, now a revered winemaker and one of the founding fathers of modern Piemonte. The Bussia vineyard is situated in Monforte d’Alba, on a combination of calcareous compact clay and sandy layers. Fruit was harvested mid-Sept to late-Oct. Selected grapes were destemmed and crushed, then fermented at 30 °C with 12 days’ maceration. Aged for 12 months, mostly in 50 hl oak barrels, with a small quantity in second-fill barriques. Winemaker Gianluca Torrengo. Attractive garnet and rust colour. Truffle, earth, smoke and blackcurrant. Really pushy tannin – loads of grip and grain on the palate. And such bracing acid! Has a long way to go, but is already very enjoyable to drink. (RH)

(a hailstorm at the end of May limited the production here to 20 hectoliters per hectare, according to winemaker Gianluca Torrengo): Good deep red. Wild, aromatic nose offers black fruits, sour cherry, licorice, marzipan and spices. Velvety, deep and utterly seamless, but with superb freshness for the year. Impressively primary too. Finishes with firm tannic spine and terrific length. "Give this three to five years for the tannins to resolve," suggests Torrengo.

Dark fruit, mocha, espresso, menthol, licorice and spices are some of the notes that emerge from the 2007 Barolo Bussia. This powerful, sensual wine possesses tons of depth and richness to match its muscular, virile tannins. The wine fleshes out nicely through to the warm, resonating finish. This is a beautiful effort from Prunotto.

It would be nice to see Prunotto take their outstanding Baroli and Barbareschi to the next level. Given the quality of their vineyards and the significant resources of the Antinori family these should be truly profound wines. A Leonardo Lo Cascio Selection, Winebow, Montvale, NJ; tel.
