The 2016 Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 1er Cru demonstrates more new oak on the nose compared to its peers, denser and perhaps more opaque, touches of blackberry, raspberry and a hint of tomato vine. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, well integrated oak, quite dense and maybe modern in style, yet well crafted with a satin-like mouthfeel on the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is lovely, wafting from the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of wild berries, forest floor, potpourri and a subtle framing of new cedar wood. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and satiny, with beautifully powdery tannins cloaked in cool, succulent fruit, concluding with a long finish. Right now, this Caillerets is quite reserved, but its structural finesse and harmony are already impressive.
Simple, light, highly polished tannic sheen. Ripe and soft structure that is drinkable now, but the flavours seem understated. There isn’t a great deal of typical Volnay character, especially considering this is premier cru. (RH)
