The 2013 Barolo Mariondino is a large-scale Barolo with broad shoulders and a deep footprint. The wine opens carefully to dark fruit, spice, leather and moist chewing tobacco. The aromas are savory, penetrating and thick. This Barolo offers substantial textural richness and a firm tannic punch that makes it way too young to approach now. The wine is macerated on the skins and stems. Only prolonged cellar aging will break down the firm inner core it displays now.

The 2013 Barolo Mariondino is a real overachiever in this vintage. Succulent red cherry, dark stone fruit and floral notes are beautifully delineated throughout. Creamy, voluptuous and yet also nuanced, the Mariondino captures the essence of the Parusso house style. This is an especially rich wine for the year.
Castiglione Falletto. Tasted blind. Mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Upfront nose of cherry and notes of cassis! Exotic cassis fruit on the palate framed by bags of grainy tannins. Is this Armando Parusso who dries his grapes? If so, this will improve with extended bottle age, but this is certainly highly unusual. (WS)
