2006 Barolo Vecchie Vigne

The 2006 Barolo is quite pretty in a mid-weight, Burgundian expression of floral red fruits. Silky tannins frame this delicate, approachable entry-level Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2021. Marco Marengo is one of Piedmont’s emerging superstar producers. Although the Marengo family has made wine here since 1899, it’s as if someone turned on a switch a few years ago, when the wines – the Barolos in particular – went from excellent to outstanding, a level they have maintained ever since. Medium-deep red. Complex, perfumed nose offers raspberry, dried flowers, tobacco and licorice. Sweet and enticing on the palate, with the raspberry and sour cherry fruit complemented by floral and leathery nuances. A lovely basic Barolo, finishing with sweet tannins and good energy.
